Fair Trade

PRESS RELEASE, February 2011 - Fair Trade Original will be attending Frankfurt's Ambiente 2011, the international Giving, Living and Dining Trade Fair that will be held from 11 to 15 February, with a range of crockery from Thailand developed in cooperation with Piet Hein Eek. The Dutch fair trade brand will also be presenting a wide range of organic fair trade cotton products designed for use throughout the house. This is the second year Fair Trade Original is taking part in Ambiente (Hall 11.0, Stand C61). This year trendwatchers have once again selected Fair Trade Original products for Ambiente's Galleria exhibition. In addition, the Fair Trade Original and Piet Hein Eek palm-wood basket has won the Design Plus Award.

Piet Hein Eek's FAT crockery

Fair Trade Original and Piet Hein Eek began marketing products together under the Fair Trade Original by Piet Hein Eek label one year ago. The successful Vietnamese palm-wood baskets and ceramic vases presented by Fair Trade Original and Piet Hein Eek are now followed by their FAT crockery. The crockery, made by Thailand's Sang Arun ceramics factory, is of a simple concept. Piet Hein Eek: "Thin is in fashion, and that includes the porcelain and ceramics world. The mould makers and potters at Thailand's Sang Arun factory usually respond to this trend by making every effort to produce the thinnest possible cups and plates for the Western market - which can be quite difficult. My idea is 'Do what you do well'. So why don't we simply make a FAT range of crockery, with a simple, plain design - and thick."

Fair + Green cotton

Fair Trade Original is introducing a wide range of organic, fair trade cotton products designed for use throughout the house under the Fair + Green label. The aprons, tea towels, tablecloths, napkins, towels and bed linen are made in India from fair trade certified cotton in a completely organic process. The cotton farmers do not use chemical pest control agents and the dyes are environmentally friendly, resulting in products that are better for the producers and better for the environment. All products are labelled with the Fairtrade/Max Havelaar Seal of Approval.

International

Dutch and European international retailers and wholesalers are exhibiting continually increasing interest in Fair Trade Original's broad fair trade product range. Fair Trade Original, with ambitious plans for growth in turnover generated by the organisation's Gifts & Living products, has stepped onto the international podium offered by Ambiente in an endeavour to further expand the organization's clientele. The objective is to increase the volume of orders for producers in the developing countries and, as a result, create more jobs, increase the income of the people who make the products and provide more training facilities.

Fair Trade Original

Fair Trade Original, formed in 1959, based its operations on the principle that economic development was the key to fighting poverty in developing countries - a fair-trade concept pioneered by the organisation that has since been embraced by many organisations and companies. Fair Trade Original imports 1200 Gifts & Living products and 150 food products from 60 trading partners in 30 developing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America for supply to the Dutch and European markets. The trading organisation offers its trading partners fair-trade conditions and supports them in their economic and social development. The people who make the products benefit from the resultant jobs, income and a better existence. Fair Trade Original, a non-profit organisation, generated a turnover of 18.6 million euros in 2010. The organisation is located in Culemborg, the Netherlands.
